Wish List – 1. The Campagna T-Rex

Campagna T-Rex

1. Number one on my Christmas wish list for 2008 is the Campagna T-Rex. It would be an invaluable accessory in my never ending documentary of America’s disappearing two-lane national highways.

A few years ago I came across a T-Rex parked outside a motel on US Route 1, in Calais, Maine. For those of you who do not know where Calais is (which would be almost all of you), it is a small city of about four thousand persons, in the extreme noth east of the US. Calais is actually a very busy border crossing between the US and Canada (Saint Stephen, New Brunswick), and as anyone who has ever been there knows, it is winter almost all year long (that is a local joke).

During the summer (the month of July) and into the fall, Route 1 is a favorite of people who like to travel long and winding roads in their SUVs and on large motorcycles ( a lot of fully decked out Harleys). Well the coolest “bike” I ever saw on Route 1 is the Campagna T-Rex.

Manufactured in Canada and designed by an ex Formula 1 engineer, T-Rex is a $50,000 version of a 1400cc Kawasaki, with bucket seats and a cool factor that belies it’s almost 10 years of being in production. An interesting side note is that motor vehicle manufacturers around the world are just discovering, that two wheels in the front and one wheel in the back makes for a very stable and at the same time very fast and sexy vehicle. There are now at least half a dozen manufacturers producing these reverse trikes around the world, but the T-Rex is still the coolest, fastest and sexiest beast on the block.
