Nikon Digital
SLRs are Number 1 in Japan.
We all know that Canon has always
sold more Digital SLR cameras than anyone else, so I was really
surprised to hear that in the lead up to Christmas, Nikon has sold more
Digital SLR cameras in Japan than anyone else. According to the
Japanese consumer trade journal BCN - http://bcnranking.jp/flash/09-00011835.html
OK Canon came in first in single camera model sales (no big surprise)
with the EOS Kiss Digital X (the EOS D400/Rebel XTi) but the combined
sales of the Nikon D80, Nikon D40, Nikon D200, and the Nikon D50, made
Nikon the dominant force in the Japanese Digital SLR sales race.
Surprisingly Pentax made a very strong showing in third place overall,
with Sony trailing the field, but the Sony A100 ended up being the
fifth best selling individual camera. None of the other Digital SLR
manufacturers even made the list of top ten best selling individual Digital SLRs.

What is fairly obvious from this report is that you need a lot of
different camera models with slightly different feature sets, if you
want to satisfy the largest number of consumers. It is also fairly
obvious that photographers are willing to spend more money to get the
camera they want, but not too much more.
The Nikon D80 outsold the Nikon D40, but not by very much, so obviously
a lot of photographers are drawn to the smaller size and the lower cost
of the D40. The D50 is still selling but I assume that is mostly
because a lot photographers expect it to be discontinued soon and they
see it as a last chance to buy an inexpensive Nikon DSLR that can use
non AFS lenses.
The Nikon D200 did fairly well but it is obviously losing out to the
Nikon D80 (which has the same resolution, in a more compact and less
robust body, with a more consumer oriented user interface). This is
probably an indication of why we are seeing fairly substantial price
reductions on the Nikon D200 at the moment, but not on the Nikon D80.
I guess I could say, I told you so, because I have written a number of
articles recently that predicted this scenario, but I'll be gracious
and just offer a virtual toast to the people from Nikon for a job well
done.

Nikon
D40 - Digital SLR
Read the article to find out why I think this a really hot camera and
why I intend to buy one for
myself before the end of the year. Could the extremely small size and
the low, low price of US$ 599 with lens, be the reason. |
Nikon D80 - Digital SLR
A lot of "aspiring" photographers are going to have a hard time
deciding between
this camera and some extra lenses and the Nikon D200. It's going to be
a tough decision and I can't really make it any easier. |
Nikon
D200 - Digital SLR
The most exciting Nikon DSLR to come along in quite a few years. I'm
not saying that it is a better camera than the Nikon D2x. But it
sure is a lot easier to carry all day and it produces some incredibly
great
images. |
