Which Nikon Digital
SLR is
the best camera to buy at this time?
Always a difficult question to
answer and many photographers are going to disagree with me but I have
narrowed my choice down to the three most recent Nikon Digital SLR
cameras for comparison.
1. The camera of the year for 2006 - the Nikon D200 - it is a steal at
the moment for an approximate street price of $1,300. for the body.
Main features are a 10 megapixel CCD, extremely rugged body, lightning
fast reflexes and a fully professional user interface. For many
professional photographers this is the new preferred camera. The D2Xs
has more features available and will not lose it's appeal at the
extreme high end crowd but the D200 is the new every day favorite of
both pros and advanced amateurs.
2. The recent high resolution value surprise - the Nikon D80 - which is
no longer that much of a steal compared to the D200 at $900. to 1000.
for the body. When this camera cost six hundred to seven hundred
dollars less than the D200 it was a real bargain for a 10 megapixel
camera but at the moment it looks a little less attractive to me at a
mere saving of three hundred to four hundred dollars. It still is a
very small and feature rich, while at the same time easy to use, high
resolution camera though.
3. The brand new light weight and low price champion - the Nikon D40 -
at an incredible price of $599. for the 6 megapixel camera with the
Nikkor 18-55 lens. This camera is designed for first time digital SLR
users and it has all the right stuff. Easy to use but also very
capable, small enough to carry all the time, a very low price. I think
the novices will love this camera and give the experienced
photographers a little time and they will want one to. Nikon has a real
winner on their hands with the new Nikon D40.
Some photographers are pointing at the almost discontinued Nikon D50
and Nikon D70 as being the best buys at the moment but to be honest I
do not subscribe to that theory. The Nikon D50 costs the same as the
new Nikon D40 at the moment and the only advantage I can see is the
ability to use AFS lenses whereas the Nikon D40 requires the newer AFS
lenses with built-in focusing motors. In almost all other regards the
newer camera is by far superior. There are quite a few photographers
with large and small collections of AFS lenses though so Nikon will
probably have no problems selling the D50 cameras they still have in
stock, without having to discount them.
The Nikon D70 is a good deal I guess if you really need a small camera
that takes CF memory cards but the memory cards are getting so cheap
now that this is no longer a valid argument. The Nikon D70s costs
almost as much as the Nikon D80, so I would have a hard time
recommending it to anyone at the moment. I think we will probably see
prices dropping quite a bit on both the D70 and the D70s cameras that
are left in stock very soon, Nikon needs to get rid of them so they can
introduce new cameras.
In the old days before digital came along you could often say that a
previous camera model was actually better than a newer model because of
stronger construction, better components, etc., but with the almost
daily advances in electronics and on board software, the newer digital
camera models are almost always going to have the edge over the older
ones.
Conclusion
If you are really serious about photography and want a great camera,
the Nikon D200 is the camera for you to buy at this time. If you want
to get into Digital SLR photography and take greast
pictures, but you don't know anything about cameras, the Nikon D40 is
for you. If you can't afford the Nikon D200 but want most of the
features at a
lower price, take a look at the Nikon D80.

| Nikon
D40 - Digital SLR - Read the article to find out why I think
this a really hot camera and
why I intend to buy one for
myself before the end of the year. Could the extremely small size and
the low, low price of US$ 599 with lens, be the reason. |
| Nikon D80 - Digital SLR - A lot
of "aspiring" photographers are going to have a hard time
deciding between
this camera and some extra lenses and the Nikon D200. It's going to be
a tough decision and I can't really make it any easier. |
Nikon
D200 - Digital SLR
The most exciting Nikon DSLR to come along in quite a few years. I'm
not saying that it is a better camera than the Nikon D2x. But it
sure is a lot easier to carry all day and it produces some incredibly
great
images. |
