Turning the new low cost Nikon D40 Digital SLR into a powerful one lens, wide angle to telephoto, 11x super-zoom camera.

Amazon price US$ 999.95
Nikon D40 Digital SLR camera with lens  NIKON 18-200MM f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor...

The AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED is the equivalent to a 27-300mm focal length on 35mm.

11x zoom coverage offers a perfect compact and lightweight, one lens solution. Enables focusing from as close as 50cm (20 in.) from the subject through its entire focal range. V
R II system offers the equivalent of using a shutter speed 4 stops faster.

A lot of digital photographers have now gotten used to using Electronic View Finder (EVF) cameras that have very powerful long range zoom lenses. The problem with all of these EVF cameras has been their less than spectacular viewfinders, very slow and often poor focusing capabilities, and some real issues with shutter lag and image write speeds (especially with RAW image files).

Now that Nikon has come out with the very compact and very affordable Nikon D40 Digital SLR, there are a lot of EVF camera users who are contemplating the move to the Nikon D40 Digital SLR. The base package price is of course very reasonable and the lens being offered in the package looks to be fairly adequate for most purposes, especially when the fairly inexpensive
AFS DX Nikkor 55-200 lens is added to the system.

The big question is of course, what will it cost to upgrade to a longer zoom range lens, so that it can be used as a one lens camera, just like the EVF super-zoom cameras it is replacing for many users. As you can see from the illustration above the
AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED fits the bill very nicely, but the cost of the lens alone is nearly double the price of the camera (with the basic kit lens).

There are two ways to look at this:

1. The
AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED is a very expensive lens to put on the Nikon D40 DSLR camera.

2. The Nikon D40 DSLR is a very inexpensive camera to put on the
AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED lens.

At the moment Nikon is selling the Nikon D40 DSLR in kit form only with the lens but even when (and if) they decide to sell the body separately from the lens, I doubt that there will be more than a hundred dollars difference. So we will still end up with a price of US$ 1,500 to 1,600 for a Nikon D40 DSLR plus
AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED, super-zoom camera package.

Is it worth this price? Yes I think so, especially considering the increase in quality and shooting ease, as compared to the last generation of EVF cameras.

You of course also have the option to spend US$ 400 more and set up this same system with the Nikon D80 DSLR, or US$ 1000 more for the same system with the Nikon D200 DSLR.

A really nice Nikon microsite on the ease of using the D40.
