I tried to think about what would be the perfect US$ 1000. digital camera gift for either a teen-age son or daughter, a wife or girlfriend, a favorite brother, or even for yourself. When you buy a gift like this, you don't want to say, "OK, now I got you the camera body, the rest is up to you, you will have to save your money and buy it yourself."

But a complete Digital SLR camera system is thousands of dollars, right? A thousand dollars just barely pays for the least expensive DSLR bodies. No longer so, all the items above total to just around a thousand dollars, and if you buy a 1GB memory card instead of the 2GB card I suggest, it is less than US$ 1000. (plus tax, wherever applicable of course).

The Nikon D40 only has a 6.1 million pixel CCD but for all but the most demanding purposes this is really more than enough. Aside from the price, I am recommending this camera because it is small and a fully functioning Nikon DSLR. Nikon is targeting the first time DSLR purchaser with this camera, but I am pretty sure that a lot of experienced photographers are also going to be tempted to buy a DSLR system that will be easier to carry at all times.

The Nikon Speedlight SB-400 covers even the widest angle setting of the Nikon D40 kit lens and swivels for bounce lighting.

The DX Nikkor 55-200mm f4-5.6 lens is compact and light weight (only 255 grams) and will allow you to bring distant objects into close focus without having to think about whether or not it makes sense to bring it (the long lens) along with you.

The Lexar SD memory cards are recommended by me but any SD memory cards will do. They are getting cheaper all the time, so it is a good idea to always carry more memory (digital film) than you think you will need.

The right camera bag can also make it easy to carry all your equipment with you all the time. I use (and sell) Kiesel but there are many choices out there. My suggestion is to stay as small as possible, that way you won't be tempted to leave the equipment at home when you go to the grocery store, you never know what picture opportunities may be waiting for you in the vegetable aisle, or the parking lot.

Most of all photography should be fun and not a burden on the photographer, this light weight and compact little system looks like it could be a lot of fun.

A really nice Nikon microsite on the ease of using the D40.
