The Nikon D80
Digital SLR combined with the 7.5x DX Nikkor 18-135 zoom, makes for a
compact and economical but powerful
photographic package
This may not be the most far reaching super-zoom Nikon
camera kit possible (for that you need the AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor
18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED (11.1x) lens),
but the slightly more compact size and lighter weight, makes this lens
a little easier to carry and the
price is sure hard to beat.
The AF-S DX 18-135mm zoom gives you a 35mm film equivalent zoom
range of 27-200mm on a DX series Nikon Digital SLR, which is really not
too shabby. Especially considering that the AF-S DX 18-135mm lens costs
less
than half of the price of the AF-S DX 18-200mm lens, which has an
equivalent 35mm film range of 27-300mm.
For all but the most extreme situations the AF-S DX 18-135mm lens
should be more than
suitable (for all day shooting without changing lenses) and it is a
significant step up from the standard AF-S DX 18-55mm
camera and lens kit configuration.
Although not a VR lens, the entire focal length range should not
present any
problems in normal daylight, as long as proper shooting practices
regarding
shutter speeds and camera support are adhered to. In low light
situation it would be best to use either a higher ISO (which will
increase the noise in your images), a tripod, or a faster lens.
There is a good reason why photojournalists use all those very
expensive (and very heavy) f2.8 lenses, they usually do not have time
for a tripod and they can't make any excuses, they have to get the shot
when it happens (at any cost).
If your livelihood does not depend upon it though, you probably want to
think twice before spending thousands of dollars per lens, when a
slower and less expensive lens will probably give you the same (and
some times better) results. I am also a firm believer in being as
comfortable as possible while I am out shooting. A sore back and sore
shoulders just don't have the same appeal to me anymore, as they did
when I was a much younger (and possibly a little dummer) photographer.

A high performance compact and lightweight 7.5x
zoom lens for Nikon DX format digital SLRs
Tokyo
– Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor
18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED, a compact, lightweight 7.5x zoom lens
featuring a host of state-of-the-art optical technologies such as the
Nikon ED glass element, aspherical lens elements and SWM (Silent Wave
Motor). Moreover, the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED
offers outstanding performance at a remarkably affordable price.
The lens has a focal length range of 18-135mm,
which is suitable for a wide variety of shooting situations ranging
from tight sports, action and portraits to wide-angle landscapes. (The
picture angle is equivalent to a 27-202.5mm lens in the 35mm format.)
Advanced Nikon engineering, in particular the compact SWM, has enabled
a compact lightweight design with excellent handling characteristics.
|
The optical design features, one ED glass element
and two hybrid aspherical lens elements assure high-resolution,
high-contrast images while minimizing chromatic aberration, astigmatism
and other forms of distortion. The compact SWM built into the lens
offers smooth and quiet autofocus performance that users have come to
expect from Nikon autofocus performance.
|
The useful range, high-quality performance and
affordable price of this lens will expand the photographic horizons of
Nikon Digital SLR owners.
|
Note:
This lens is designed exclusively for use with Nikon DX format digital
SLR cameras and is not compatible with 35mm [135] or IX240 format film
cameras. Specifications, design, product name, standard accessories,
and release schedule may differ by country or area.
